Math for kids: where to start

The question isn’t whether a five-year-old “should” be adding by now. It’s what’s in front of them today and what’s missing for the next step. Here’s what usually comes before what, and how it shows when a step got skipped.

Quantity comes before numbers

Between two and three, what gets built isn’t reciting numbers but the idea of how many: more and less, big and small, one against many. A child can rattle off to ten without knowing which of two piles is bigger. Reciting is memory; comparing is math, and it holds up everything after it.

Counting for real: ages 4 to 5

Counting properly means touching each thing once, skipping none, and understanding that the last number said is how many there are. That last piece — cardinality — is where kids stall, and it’s easy to spot: they count five chips correctly, and when you ask how many there are, they start over.

Adding and subtracting: ages 5 to 7

First with objects they can see, then on fingers, and only then from memory. Skipping the object stage is the most common reason a child “knows” their sums right up until a word problem shows up and they can’t tell which operation it wants. Breaking ten apart (7 and 3, 6 and 4) is worth more than any times table.

Multiplication, division and fractions: ages 8 to 11

Multiplication lands as repeated addition and as an array, not as a list to chant. And fractions make sense after sharing something real: a half is what’s left when two people split the same thing, not a number written over another with a line between.

How to see where they’re stuck

A repeated mistake is almost never carelessness — it’s a wrong idea that happens to work sometimes. Starting the count over every time you ask "how many are there" is easy to mistake for shyness. Most add with support between five and six, and without support around seven. The normal range is wide: understanding what they’re doing matters more than the age they do it at.

More than an hour on Sunday. For something built in layers, frequency beats duration: short and regular sticks, long and occasional gets lost between sessions.
